AQUARELLA SWIMWEAR

Growing up on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, Véronique de la Cruz could not help but adopt twin passions for high fashion and the ideal beach ensemble. The island has a real bathing suit culture, she recalls. When you go to the beach in a bathing suit, it as if you are going to a party. As a young girl, I spent my time saving money to buy swimsuits. I had to look fabulous when I went out. In Guadeloupe, it was a fashion faux pas to be seen wearing the same bathing suit twice. So my cousin and I saved money to buy different swimsuits and we would exchange and mix and match them so it would always seem that we had something new.

Even so, Véronique was never completely satisfied with the results. I would always find something wrong with the suits and wanted to modify them to my taste, adding that special something - that French flair. The desire to find the perfect suit burned strong.

As a young woman, Véronique's desire to explore the worlds of fashion, beauty and her French heritage led her, in 1993, to travel for the first
time to her spiritual homeland, to enter the Miss France contest. Here she had to draw on reserves of strength and determination to overcome a number of obstacles, large and small, including learning how to walk in high heels and the racial barrier. She recalls, All the contestants told me I was really good but would never win because I was black.

Undeterred, Véronique went on to capture the Miss France crown, becoming the first woman of color to do so. She learned along the way the values of believing in yourself and setting goals. She also paved the way for other young women of different backgrounds to enter and win the contest in years since. And she also set the tone for dazzling glamour that can be seen in her swimsuit designs today.

Not one to rest on her laurels, Véronique set out to prove there were brains behind the beauty. She studied law at Assas in Paris and then became the popular assistant to the mayor in the small town of Bagneaux. She also kept a hand in the world of fashion, modeling for designers such as Pierre Cardin, Paco Rabanne and Azzaro.

In 2006 Véronique moved to Costa Rica where she launched V del Sol, her first swimwear company that was hailed as The Next Big Thing!?and covered in magazines that included Vogue, Elle, Flare and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. After three wonderful years, the company had to be disband due to personal reasons.
